People suffering from back pain often find that they have few good options. Often, they medicate the symptoms but never treat the problem, or they are faced with the frightening alternative of back surgery.

Luckily, Dr. Ken Cook at Chiropractic Works in Watkinsville, Georgia, knows that non-surgical spinal decompression is often the answer for people who are suffering from sciatica, facet syndrome, bulging or herniated discs, or even some cases of degenerative arthritis. Contact us today to learn more about your options for spinal decompression in Watkinsville & Athens GA.

“Non-surgical spinal decompression is a much more conservative approach to correctively address serious back conditions,” Dr. Cook explains. “The typical medical approach for most of the cases I see involves either oral medications to manage symptoms or epidural injections to temporarily affect the symptoms. Neither are corrective in effort and do nothing to try to improve the health of the joint, and finally, of course, surgery is a last resort, and it is not always successful. Decompression therapy is a much easier and non-invasive alternative to any of these options.

Non-Surgical Approach to Spinal Decompression

Back Decompression vs. Traction

Back Decompression vs. Traction

Spinal decompression is not the same thing as traction, though in some ways it looks like traction. Spinal decompression, also known as decompression therapy, involves a higher level of technology than traditional traction that involves a series of stretching and relaxation cycles to relieve patients suffering from lower back pain and leg pain due to herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, and facet syndrome. “The DRX 9000 is a tool, and I believe it is important for me to use this tool with integrity and not just throw everybody on it just because I have it.” Dr. Cook says people with osteoporosis or people with fractures in the ring of the vertebrae would not be candidates for the non-surgical spinal decompression. For some patients, a weight loss plan may be recommended prior to non-surgical spinal decompression treatment. Contraindication: extreme claustrophobia Book Appointment
How Spinal Decompression Works

How Spinal Decompression Works

Through a slow, methodical non-surgical spinal decompression process utilizing the DRX 9000 Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression System, Dr. Cook is able to relieve the stress on the joints in the spine and allow nutrition to reach the disc nucleus. The DRX 9000 also allows Dr. Cook, in most cases, to target specific joints in the spine, thus directly impacting the issues causing pain for the patient. “It’s just a better technology,” Dr. Cook says. “Traction can be effective in some cases, but most often in an acute disc situation or a raging sciatic pain or a bulging or herniated disc situation, non-surgical spinal decompression is simply the better alternative to treat the cause of the pain,” Dr. Cook said. For those patients whose back pain can be treated with non-surgical spinal decompression, the treatment protocols at Chiropractic Works can make life-altering differences. Book Appointment

Dr. Cook acknowledges that not every person is a candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression for back pain treatment, and it will not solve every issue. “Some factors can preclude people from being a good candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression,” Dr. Cook says. “That’s why we do a thorough work-up process – a real A-to- Z workup – before I will recommend this for any patient. And there may be some that the chances of a successful treatment will not be that good, and in those situations I just have to be honest with them and have a frank conversation about whether or not this is the best plan moving forward. A lot of times, though, people will want to try everything they can before they go under the knife, and I have seen it work even in situations where I did not know whether or not it would.”
